Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40 was on the air by then. It counts down its own chart, for years based on Radio and Records airplay rather than Billboard, so its number one could differ.

Countdown shows
American Top 40
- 1970 to 1988, Casey Kasem. From July 4, 1970 to August 6, 1988, counting down the Billboard Hot 100. For any date in those years, the Billboard Hot 100 number one above is a good guide to the show's number one that weekend.
- 1988 to 1995, Shadoe Stevens. Casey left over a contract dispute, and Shadoe hosted from August 13, 1988. The show counted down the Hot 100 until November 1991, then Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart, then from January 1993 Billboard's Top 40 Mainstream airplay chart. ABC stopped distributing it in the US in 1994, and the last show went out overseas on January 28, 1995.
- 1998 to 2004, Casey again. The show came back on March 28, 1998 with Casey hosting, now counting down Radio and Records' pop airplay chart rather than Billboard. His last show was the weekend of January 3, 2004.
- 2004 to now, Ryan Seacrest. Ryan took over on January 10, 2004. The show now counts down Mediabase's pop radio airplay chart, and publishes its chart every week.

Casey Kasem's other countdowns
- Casey's Top 40, January 21, 1989 to March 1998, on Westwood One. Casey started it after leaving American Top 40, so it went head to head with the show he founded until that one left the air. It counted down Radio and Records' pop airplay chart.
- Casey's Countdown, March 7, 1992 to March 1998, for adult contemporary stations.
- Casey's Hot 20, November 5, 1994 to March 1998, for hot adult contemporary stations.
- American Top 20 and American Top 10, March 28, 1998 to July 4, 2009. Two adult contemporary spinoffs that started the same weekend American Top 40 came back. The mainstream adult contemporary edition was cut to ten songs in March 2004 and became American Top 10. Casey kept hosting both after handing American Top 40 to Ryan Seacrest, and retired from radio on the weekend of July 4, 2009.
Rick Dees Weekly Top 40
Rick's countdown started in September 1983 and is still on the air. It counts down its own chart, which for years was based on Radio and Records airplay rather than Billboard, so its number one could differ from the Hot 100. Its weekly charts aren't published openly, so this site can't list them, but there are two iHeartRadio stations for it: the current show, and complete countdowns from the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s.

About this page
A chart's date is the date printed on that week's chart, which for Billboard is usually a few days after the chart was released. Billboard's full weekly charts aren't freely available, so this page shows number ones and peaks rather than every position of each week. Year-end charts come from Wikipedia's yearly lists. American Top 40 countdowns are read, when you ask for one, from The Real American Top 40 wiki, a fan wiki shared under CC BY-SA; each links to the wiki page it came from, and Long Distance Dedications and special shows aren't included.
Release dates prefer Wikipedia, because Apple often lists the date of a later reissue or compilation. Spotify, YouTube Music and Amazon links open a search for the song.
